Signs of an Infestation

Bed Bugs - Signs of an Infestation

The best form of defence for your business is to spot a bed bug problem as quickly as possible, but you need to know how they might get in.

How do bed bugs enter premises?

The most common sources of bed bug infestations are from guests clothing and luggage, staff and employees, external contractors, laundry services, neighbouring properties, second hand and vintage furniture.

Bed bugs are a potential risk for any business. However, those dealing with accommodation and transport of people have a higher risk of bed bug infestations. Industries such as hospitality (hotels, guest houses) transportation (airlines, railways, coaches) and public institutions (healthcare, universities, prisons) for example.

With such a range of infestation sources it is almost impossible to prevent bed bugs entering premises. It can take just 10 -12 weeks for a bed bug infestation to reach a level at which guests or visitors will notice the problem. Vulnerable businesses need a professional bed bug protection programme in place, to significantly reduce this risk.

Rentokil technicians are trained to detect bed bugs at the earliest stages, so problems can be dealt with swiftly and discreetly. Call us to arrange a free business site survey on 0800 552 004.

What bed bug signs to look for & where bed bugs hide

Bed bugs are not the easiest of pests to detect. However, there are some bed bug symptoms which, when found, show that there is an infestation:

  • Live bed bugs (both adults & young nymphs) and cast nymphal skins
  • Small, dark blood spots on sheets and bedding, known as 'faecal pellets'
  • A distinctive sweet & sickly smell

As the name implies bed bugs can be found in any part of a bed or bedding including pillows, blankets, duvets, sheets, the seams of mattresses, headboards. As well as carpets, underlay, under skirting boards, between floorboards, in cracked & broken plaster, behind peeling wallpaper, in wardrobes, draws and cupboards (especially where bedding is stored) even inside electric plugs, sockets and fittings.

If you have spotted any of these bed bug signs then you need to act immediately. Call us free on 0800 552 004 to arrange a visit from a qualified and experienced Rentokil technician.

There are other insects that bite that may cause similar problems, such as mosquitos, fleas, ticks and house dust mites. Our highly trained technicians and field biologists will help identify the exact pest that has invaded your premises.

Reactive service for bed bugs

With many years of experience in dealing with bed bugs we have developed effective reactive treatments (such as Entotherm heat treatment,  our award winning 'chemical free' bed bug treatment) that quickly and effectively brings the problem under control with the minimum of disruption to your business.

The principles of our treatment result from an expert understanding of bed bug biology. Our service for bed bugs is based on the cube concept and includes a minimum of 3 visit treatments to the infested room. Along with inspections of the surrounding rooms (checking for any spread of the bed bug infestation) and treatment of the surrounding rooms if required.

The Cube Approach diagram

Our approach is based on the cube concept, as this builds on the fact that bed bugs can move into rooms adjacent to the one where the initial infestation took place. We inspect the rooms on either side and above/below the source room. If bed bugs are detected in any of these rooms we will then expand the cube until no further  bed bug signs are found.

Proactive service for bed bugs

Our proactive approach to bed bugs will help reduce any risks you may face from an infestation. It is based on 3 key elements:

Bed bug risk assessment - We carry out an in-depth survey of your premises and operations to check for areas that may increase the risk of a bed bug infestation. Along with room inspections to add reassurance that you do not have a current infestation of bed bugs.

Staff training - We train your staff (housekeeping, maintenance, management teams) how to spot bed bug signs, where to check for them and what actions to take if they do find bed bugs in your premises.

Proactive inspections for bed bugs - At the heart of our approach to minimising any risk you face from bed bugs is our programme of inspections by trained and experienced Rentokil technicians on a regular basis. Our recommendation is to inspect all vulnerable areas of your business at least once a year, although the exact details will be agreed with you.
